Boxer

Developer diary: plans and progress reports.

Radio silence Tuesday 28th April 2009

Sorry that there have been no new news on Boxer for over a month: I’ve been very busy with Real Life lately, work and finances and moving to a new house, which has left no time for focusing on development work. Life should get less busy in May and June though, and I hope to get stuck into things again soon.

The most recent development work has been towards eliminating the Applescript wrapper. I had originally planned to do this for 1.0, and release 0.9 as another hybrid; but a flurry of capricious Applescript error reports has convinced me that it is time to dump that code like a corpse in a trunk. Once this step is out of the way, Boxer will be much more stable, easier to maintain, and able to open and install games from the menu without quitting the application each time.

Commentary

  1. I just grabbed Boxer .8 after a period of not using the app for awhile, and I have to have I'm impressed. The new site is gorgeous, and the app worked flawlessly with Dungeon Keeper (drag and drop!). Thanks.

  2. Cool! Long time I've talked to you Alun, everything okay there? I stopped creating my first app and moved on to something new, something easier.. still AppleScript, coding almost done (took 2 hours, I said it was easier) now I have to create an interface for it..

BTW, do you know that DOSBox 0.73 comes out this month ?

  3. Thanks for the heads-up Jef! Hopefully I can integrate the new 0.73 codebase quickly once it's released, though I'm still concerned that their recent changes to the cycles syntax may break existing config files (grr.) I'm looking forward to the speed and compatibility improvements too, we'll have to see how Boxer can work in the new machine emulation modes.
